Introduction

Spotted Sicklefish, locally known as Jalebi (جلیبی), is a summer-season specialty with a distinct flat, disc-like shape and silvery body that closely resembles Pomfret. Because of this similarity, it is often misrepresented by street vendors as “Jalebi Pomfret”, especially in roadside fish markets. However, it is not related to the Pomfret family, despite its visual resemblance.

Scientifically named Drepane punctata, this fish features thick bones and firm meat, making it ideal for slice cuttings and masala frying. While its popularity is growing, true identification is essential, as many buyers unknowingly consume it thinking it’s a type of Pomfret.

Flovar Profile

Spotted Sicklefish (Jalebi) offers mild, sweet-flavored white meat that holds well in frying pans and grills. The flesh is moist, tender, and flavorful, absorbing spices beautifully and ideal for masala fry or pan-searing with desi marinades.
