Overview & identification
The Blue Swimmer Crab (Portunus segnis), locally called Neela Kaikra (نیلا کیکڑا), belongs to the family Portunidae, order Decapoda, class Malacostraca and phylum Arthropoda. It is one of the easiest crabs to spot: a vibrant blue shell, long legs and broad paddle-shaped rear limbs built for swimming, with males carrying a brighter blue and females tending towards brownish-green. The species thrives in warm, tropical water along Pakistan’s coastline, favouring sandy and muddy seabeds, estuaries and shallow bays, and is landed regularly off Karachi, Sonmiani, Pasni and Gwadar. Daily Catch sources them through traps, hand collection and selective netting, methods chosen deliberately to protect the stock and the wider marine ecosystem while keeping the crabs in excellent condition.
Flavor & texture
Blue Swimmer Crab is prized for a mildly sweet, gently briny flavor and tender, flaky white meat. It is distinctly softer and more delicate than Mud Crab or other local varieties, which changes how you should use it: rather than competing with heavy spicing, it takes flavor on board. The subtle taste absorbs spices, herbs and rich sauces beautifully, making it one of the more versatile crabs in the kitchen. That delicacy is exactly why it works so well in soups, pasta, seafood stews and light grilled dishes, where the meat stays fine-textured and the broth or sauce carries the seasoning. If you want crab that complements a dish rather than dominating it, this is the one.
Sizing, cutting & yield
Individual crabs typically weigh between 150 and 220 g, though the exact grade depends on what comes in from the harbour on your delivery day. The minimum order for this product is 2 kg, and all prices are quoted on weight before cleaning. Two preparation options are available. Whole and uncleaned gives you 100% of the weight you paid for, shell and all, which is what you want if you are cooking crab in the shell for a boil or a curry. Cleaned crabs yield approximately 55–60%, so a 2 kg order comes to roughly 1.1–1.2 kg once prepared. Choosing cleaned saves considerable kitchen work on a crab this size, since the pieces are small.
Cooking & health benefits
The delicate texture and mild sweetness make this crab ideal for soups, steaming and mixed seafood platters. It is the classic choice for crab bisque, where the briny flavor deepens the broth without overwhelming it, and steaming keeps its fresh oceanic taste fully intact. The soft, flaky meat also makes excellent crab meatballs for appetisers, and whole crabs work well in a seafood boil alongside shrimp, mussels, corn and potatoes. On the nutrition side, it supplies high-quality protein for building and maintaining muscle, Omega-3 fatty acids that support heart health and reduce inflammation, and vitamin B12 for mental sharpness and protection against anaemia. Selenium and zinc round it out, strengthening immune function and supporting bone health, all in a naturally low-fat food.
