Overview & Identification
Mud Crab (Scylla olivacea), known locally as Kaikra (کیکڑا), is one of the largest and meatiest crab species found in Pakistan’s coastal waters. It sits in the family Portunidae, order Decapoda, class Malacostraca and phylum Arthropoda, and is easy to identify by its broad, oval shell, strong pincers and thick legs, with colouring that shifts from dark green to brown depending on habitat and diet. These crabs live in coastal mangrove forests and estuarine waters along Sindh and Balochistan, burrowing into the sand and feeding on small marine organisms. That mangrove habitat is exactly what gives them their thick shells and dense flesh. Daily Catch sources them wild using hand collection, crab traps and tidal fishing, which keeps the mangrove ecosystem intact.

Flavor & Texture
Mud Crab is valued for a sweet, briny and slightly nutty flavor with a firm yet juicy texture. Its meat is noticeably thicker and denser than other crabs landed from the Arabian Sea, which is what makes it the preferred choice whenever a dish needs chunky, substantial crab meat rather than delicate flakes. That density also means it holds its shape through long cooking, so it works in flavourful broths, slow curries and over direct heat on the grill without falling apart. The naturally rich taste stands up to strong company: it pairs particularly well with bold spices, garlic butter and coconut-based sauces, which is why it appears so often in Pakistani, Thai, Chinese and wider South Asian cooking.

Sizing, Cutting & Yield
Mud Crabs are sold in two grades, and they are priced differently. Export-quality crabs are physically perfect with no broken claws or legs, average 400–600 g each, and cost more because of strong demand from China, Thailand and the Gulf. Export-rejected crabs have one or more broken claws or legs, average 120–250 g each, and sell for less while remaining just as meaty and flavourful. The minimum order is 2 kg and all prices are based on weight before cleaning. You can choose whole and uncleaned, which is 100% of the weight you pay for, or cleaned crabs, which yield roughly 55–60%. A 2 kg cleaned order therefore lands at about 1.1–1.2 kg.

Cooking & Health Benefits
The firm, succulent meat suits both everyday and gourmet cooking. Its natural sweetness enriches soups and bisques, while steaming preserves the clean, oceanic flavor better than any other method. Minced crab meat blended with spices makes excellent crab balls for appetisers, and whole crabs work beautifully in a seafood boil alongside shrimp, corn and potatoes. Spicy seafood curry and butter-garlic preparations remain the most popular choices. Nutritionally, Mud Crab is dense in lean protein for muscle growth and repair, with Omega-3 fatty acids that support heart health, brain function and reduced inflammation. It also delivers zinc, selenium and copper for immunity, metabolism and skin health, plus vitamin B12 for nerve function and red blood cell production, all while staying low in fat and calories.
