Introduction
Palla fish, called Hilsa Shad in English, holds a special place on every Sindhi table and enjoys a loyal following across Pakistan. People prize Palla for its rich, oily flesh and its deep, distinctive flavor that no other river fish quite matches. This fish lives in the Arabian Sea and swims up the Indus River to breed, which is why the local catch around the monsoon season carries such a strong reputation. We source our Palla fresh so you get the authentic taste that families in Sindh have loved for generations. Buy fresh Palla fish online at Wholesome Seafood and bring home a true regional delicacy.
Flavor Profile
Palla delivers a bold, buttery, and slightly oily taste that sets it apart from lean white fish. The flesh stays soft and rich, soaking up mustard, chili, and spices beautifully. This natural oiliness is exactly why cooks love it for traditional fried Palla, tawa fry, and classic Sindhi masala preparations. One bite explains why Palla machli stays in such high demand every season.

Habitat
Palla is an anadromous fish, meaning it lives in the sea and migrates into freshwater rivers to spawn. In Pakistan, the fish enters the Indus River from the Arabian Sea during the monsoon, usually around May or June, and travels along the stretch from the sea up toward Kotri. Across the wider region it also appears in the Arabian Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Bay of Bengal, with river populations in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and beyond. This Indus connection is what gives Sindhi Palla its famous character.
Catching Method
At Wholesome Seafood we source Palla through traditional riverine and coastal gillnet fishing, the same methods local fishing communities along the Indus have relied on for years. We work to bring you fresh, carefully handled Palla while respecting the natural fishing seasons that keep this species healthy.
Physical Attributes
Palla has a deep, strongly compressed body with a bright, metallic silver sheen along its sides. Medium-sized scales cover the body in neat rows, and the upper jaw carries a distinct notch in the middle. The belly runs sharp and the overall shape is streamlined, which suits a fish built for long, fast swims upriver. Fresh Palla shows clear eyes, firm flesh, and that clean silvery shine.
Size
Palla generally grows up to around 60 cm in length. Commonly available fish measure about 35 to 40 cm, while a large Palla can weigh close to 2.5 kg, and females usually grow larger than males. We offer fresh whole fish in a range of 400 – 600g per fish.
Approx. Cleaning Yields
Whole Fish (uncleaned): 100% weight
Whole and Gutted: 80% yield
Headless and Gutted: 60% yield
Slices: 60% yield
Note: Palla naturally carries fine bones throughout its flesh, which is part of its traditional character. We recommend Whole, Gutted, or Slices for the most authentic results, and our team can guide you on the best cut for frying.
Cooking Preferences
Palla shines when you fry it. Sindhi families love it as a crisp tawa fry seasoned with chili, turmeric, and a squeeze of lemon, and it works wonderfully in mustard-based curries too. The rich, oily flesh handles bold spices with ease. Serve your Palla with rice, fresh naan, or classic Sindhi sides for a meal that tastes like tradition. Because of its natural bones, gentle frying and slow eating bring out the best experience.
Health Benefits
Palla is loaded with heart-friendly Omega-3 fatty acids, the good fats that support brain function and keep your heart working well. It also delivers quality protein to help build and maintain muscle, along with essential vitamins and minerals. Its natural oiliness makes it one of the richer sources of these healthy fats among local fish, so you get real nutrition alongside a flavor you will genuinely enjoy.
