Overview & identification

Queenfish, more specifically the Talang Queenfish and known locally as Saram (سارم) or Aalri, is Scomberoides commersonnianus of the family Carangidae, order Carangiformes, class Actinopterygii and phylum Chordata. It is one of the most frequently caught seawater fish in the Arabian Sea, sitting alongside Barracuda, Tuna, Croaker and Snapper as a staple of the Pakistani coastline. You can identify it by a long, flat silver body with a pointed head, a forked tail and a row of dark oval spots along the mid-body line. It is abundant off Sindh and Balochistan, particularly around Karachi, Ormara and Gwadar, thriving in inshore tropical waters. Local fishermen catch it with gillnets and hand lines, and we source it through sustainable coastal gillnet fishing.

Flavor & texture

Saram has a mild, slightly sweet flavor carried by firm, low-fat flesh. It is not as rich or oily as Tuna or Mahi Mahi and does not pretend to be — what it offers instead is a clean, satisfying bite that holds its shape through cooking rather than falling apart. The off-white flesh takes marinades well, which matters because this is a fish that works best with seasoning rather than on its own. That combination of firmness and neutrality is exactly why it performs so well in desi masala preparations, and why commercial kitchens use it as a dependable stand-in for considerably more expensive fish.

Sizing, cutting & yield

Queenfish is typically available in medium to large sizes, from 1 kg to 5 kg per fish depending on the seasonal catch. All prices are based on weight before cutting. Approximate yields are 100% whole and uncleaned, 80% whole and gutted, 70% for both headless-and-gutted and slices, and 45% for boneless fillet. That fillet yield is unusually good for a fish of this price, and it is the reason Saram is so widely used for boneless products: the naturally flat, elongated body has no complex bone structure, so it cuts into uniform boneless portions with very little waste compared with rounder-bodied species.

Cooking & health benefits

Saram is versatile and budget-friendly, suiting home kitchens and commercial use equally. It is widely used for boneless fish curry, fish fingers, grilling, air-frying and marinated fish steaks, and its consistent flesh texture makes it a genuine substitute for pricier fish in ready-to-cook products. Nutritionally it is a good source of lean protein, vitamin B12 and selenium while staying low in fat, supporting muscle strength and metabolism and fitting well into low-calorie eating. Its year-round availability is part of the value: it lets families keep fish in the weekly rotation without stretching the budget.
