Overview & Identification
Silver Pomfret, locally known as Gabbar Paplet (گبّر پاپلیٹ), is Pampus chinensis of the family Stromateidae, order Perciformes, class Actinopterygii and phylum Chordata. It is a luxury species from the Arabian Sea, recognised by a broad, flat, diamond-shaped silver body with no visible scales, a rounded snout and firm white flesh. It runs noticeably larger than regular Silver Pomfret — often double the size — with an excellent meat-to-bone ratio. The fish inhabits tropical coastal waters, mudflats and sandy seabeds, and is landed only sporadically near Karachi in small quantities. Because most of what is caught goes straight to premium export markets in the Gulf and Southeast Asia, very little reaches domestic buyers, and Daily Catch secures it through reservations or special market availability.
Flavor & Texture
Gabbar Paplet is defined by rich, moist, tender white meat with a mild, buttery flavor. The flesh is soft but structured, holding together well under heat while still eating delicately, and the low bone content makes it far easier to serve than most fish of comparable size. The taste is elegant and refined rather than assertively fishy, which is precisely why it commands the prices it does and why it is a staple in premium dining rooms. It rewards restraint in the kitchen — a simple salt and lemon rub is genuinely all it needs, and heavy spicing tends to mask the very quality you are paying for.
Sizing, Cutting & Yield
Fish typically run 500 g to 1 kg each, with the exact size depending on availability. The minimum order is 2 kg, and prices are based on weight before cutting. Four cutting options are offered. Whole and uncleaned is 100% of the weight you pay for. Whole and gutted yields approximately 85%, while headless and gutted and slices both yield approximately 70%. Filleting is not recommended for this fish. Most customers choose thick slices to make the most of the large size and rich texture. A 2 kg order taken as slices delivers roughly 1.4 kg of prepared fish.
Cooking & Health Benefits
The rich flesh suits tandoori-style grilling, pan-frying, oven-baked lemon butter preparations and coconut-based curries, and it is a natural centrepiece for high-end seafood platters and festive meals. Whole grilling and thick slice cuts both show off the size well. Nutritionally it delivers a substantial amount of high-quality protein, which your body uses to build and repair muscle and which keeps you feeling full for longer after eating. Alongside the protein it supplies Omega-3 fatty acids, the healthy fats that support cardiovascular function and brain processes including memory. For a fish this indulgent on the plate, it remains a straightforwardly nutritious choice for a regular meal.
