Overview & identification

Unicorn Leatherjacket, known locally as Chappal or Irani Paplet (چپل/ایرانی پاپلیٹ), is Aluterus monoceros of the family Monacanthidae, order Tetraodontiformes, class Actinopterygii and phylum Chordata. It is one of the most unusual-looking species landed from the Arabian Sea: a flat, elongated body with a pointed snout, a disproportionately large head, no scales at all, and tough leathery skin in place of them. Beneath that odd exterior sits surprisingly white, succulent flesh. The fish is found around coastal and reef areas, particularly near rocky seabeds and coral zones, and is landed regularly at Karachi Fish Harbour in moderate quantities throughout the year. Daily Catch sources it through coastal netting and line fishing, selecting only export-grade fish.

Flavor & texture

The flesh is juicy, mildly sweet and often described as chicken-like, staying tender rather than drying out when cooked. The texture is soft and delicate, yet it has enough structure to hold together through pan-frying and light curries without breaking apart. The flavor is clean and satisfying, with none of the strong fishiness that puts some people off seafood, and it regularly surprises customers trying it for the first time on the strength of its appearance alone. If you are cooking for children, or for anyone who usually avoids fish, this is one of the easiest introductions on the list — the taste is far more approachable than the look suggests.

Sizing, cutting & yield

Whole fish typically run 1 to 2 kg each. Be aware that meat yield is lower than most fish of comparable weight, because the head is very large and the skin thick, so a good portion of that weight is not edible. All prices are based on weight before cleaning. Approximate yields are 100% whole and uncleaned, 80% whole and gutted, 50% for both headless-and-gutted and slices, and 35% for fillet. We strongly recommend ordering this fish sliced or as boneless fillet: the hard outer skin and large head genuinely need professional cleaning, and we remove the inedible outer layer and prepare ready-to-cook portions for you.

Cooking & health benefits

Chappal is ideal for pan-frying, shallow frying or grilling, and it is best cooked as boneless fillets or slices rather than whole. It needs very little help — light seasoning with herbs, garlic and lemon is enough, and the white meat stays juicy and tender through cooking, which makes it a reliable crowd-pleaser for adults and children alike. Nutritionally it offers lean protein and essential nutrients with very little fat. That low oiliness supports muscle health and easy digestion, and makes it a good fit for anyone eating light or wanting a clean, low-fat source of protein without giving up flavor.
