Overview & identification

Reef Cod, known locally as Damba (ڈمبا), is Epinephelus diacanthus of the family Serranidae, order Perciformes, class Actinopterygii and phylum Chordata. Its English name is worth clearing up: despite being called Reef Cod across South Asia, it is not related to cod at all — it is a grouper, properly called the Spinycheek Grouper. It has a robust, thick body with distinct spines on its cheeks that give it a rugged look, greyish to light brown speckled skin, and pure white meat underneath. It lives among coral reefs and rocky seabeds of the Arabian Sea and is landed at Karachi Fish Harbour year-round, with peak availability through winter and spring. Daily Catch sources it using selective gillnets and hook-and-line, handpicking each fish for size, colour and texture.

Flavor & texture

Damba is defined by clean, odourless white meat with a naturally mild flavor and a soft but firm texture. The flesh stays intact through cooking rather than flaking apart, which is what makes it so dependable for grilling, frying and anything cut into portions. It takes marinades and masalas well without needing them — the result is light and satisfying even with minimal seasoning, so heavy spicing is a choice rather than a necessity. The complete absence of a strong fishy smell is a large part of its appeal, both in home kitchens and in the export markets that compete for it, and it is one of the easiest fish to serve to children.

Sizing, cutting & yield

Fish run from 300 to 700 grams each, a size that suits slicing, filleting or cooking whole equally well. All prices are based on weight before cutting. Four options are available: whole and uncleaned, whole and gutted, headless and gutted, slices, and fillet. Approximate yields are 100% whole and uncleaned, 80% whole and gutted, 65% headless and gutted, 60% slices, and 35% fillet. Because the bone content is low and the meat structure firm, we recommend the fillet or slice options for most customers — they are what make quick weeknight meals possible, though note the fillet yield is the steepest drop on the list.

Cooking & health benefits

This grouper is at its best in boneless preparations: crispy fish fingers, pan-fried fillets and grilled skewers all suit it, and it holds up equally well in light curries and oven-baked dishes. Because the flesh is mild and odourless, simple seasoning is genuinely enough, and children tend to eat it happily. Nutritionally it is high in lean protein and carries selenium, phosphorus and vitamin B12, supporting muscle recovery, heart health and immune strength. Its naturally low fat content makes it a sensible choice for anyone following a low-cholesterol eating plan without wanting to give up fish.
